Orange 1 FFF Racing Team equals its best result at the 2021 Spa 24 Hours

2nd August 2021

Orange 1 FFF Racing Team battled for a great result at the 2021 24 Hours of Spa, the headline event of Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS and Intercontinental GT Challenge Powered by Pirelli calendars. The Chinese squad took eighth place with the #63 Lamborghini Huracàn GT3 Evo driven by Mirko Bortolotti, Andrea Caldarelli and Marco Mapelli, repeating the best achievement conquered here by Lamborghini Squadra Corse in 2019, and showing a potential worth of an overall podium outcome.

The ambitions were confirmed by the second-fastest lap time set in the Super Pole qualifying session, 2:18.252, but most of all by the provisional leadership kept during the night segment. Two drive-throughs for pitlane speeding compromised the Orange1 FFF Racing Team march at the top of the group, but Bortolotti, Mapelli and Caldarelli had the pace to come back into fourth position, in a race that became even more challenging due to the unpredictable weather. Contact with a rival car, and later a puncture with two hours to go determined the final eighth spot, which was still the best finish for Lamborghini Squadra Corse in the Belgian marathon.

The other Orange 1 FFF Racing Team crew was more unlucky. The #19 car competing in the Pro-Am class was forced to retire at its 180th lap as a consequence of technical problems during the night. Regular drivers Hiroshi Hamaguchi and Phil Keen were joined for this event by Stefano Costantini and local hero Bertrand Baguette.

Next stop for the Orange 1 FFF Racing Team in the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS Endurance Cup is scheduled on 3-5 September at the Nürburgring.

Fu Songyang, Team Owner Orange1 FFF Racing Team
“The eighth place isn’t the result we were aiming coming to the event, and during the race, as at some point and for some time, we could hope for something great, like a podium or even a win. We had all the ingredients to reach that goal, but at the 24 Hours of Spa, many things can always happen, not just because of the weather. In the end, we didn’t get what we deserved, but we equalled the best finish of a Lamborghini Squadra Corse car in this fascinating event. A big role was played by Andrea, Marco and Mirko with their determination and speed. I also want to thank our loyal partner Orange 1 for the constant support we received, especially in such a special event like this 24 Hours race. After a short break, we are going to start again to tackle in the best way the final part of the championship”.
